Spring is finally on its way! With the sun beginning to shine and the roads drying up, it’s time to get your bike tuned up and back on the road. For most, cycling means fresh air, exercise and an enjoyable commute for the next six months. Unfortunately, accidents can happen and in the event that you are involved in a collision with a car, it’s important to know how to obtain help for any injuries you have experienced.

Common Cycling and Car Accidents

Research from the City of Toronto reports that the five most common accidents in Toronto involving cyclists and motor vehicles are:

  • Motorist turning right collides with cyclist travelling in parallel direction
  • Vehicle’s occupant opens door in cyclist’s path; cyclist collides with door
  • Motorist turning left collides with cyclist approaching from opposite direction
  • Motorist overtaking cyclist, collides with cyclist
  • Motorist emerges from driveway or lane, collides with cyclist crossing their path

Claim for Accident Benefits

If you, as a cyclist, are involved in an accident with a motor vehicle, you are entitled to make a claim for accident benefits. Depending on the extent of your injuries, you may be entitled to receive income replacement benefits, medical and rehabilitation benefits and attendant care benefits. To receive any benefits, you must submit an Application for Accident Benefits form.

Where you send your application depends entirely on your situation. All of the details about where to send your forms are outlined in the accident claim form itself.
