Tonight, neighbourhoods will be transformed into magical, moonlit places for an evening of fun and fantasy. Witches, ghosts and goblins will be prowling the streets in search of some sweet treats and spook, while being greeted at doorsteps by grinning jack-o’-lanterns and other scary creatures. Although Halloween is an exciting time for children of all ages, it’s important to keep trick-or-treating safety tips in mind.
- Maintain visibility: trick-or-treaters should always carry a light source or have reflective material, either as part of their costume or on their Halloween bag.
- Avoid driving: if possible, avoid driving in densely populated neighbourhoods after dusk. If you must drive, reduce your speed and be alert for the increased number of pedestrians on the roads.
- Turn lights on: homeowners and tenants should make sure their property is well lit and clear of any tripping hazards.
- Don’t trip: parents and guardians, be sure your child’s costume is short enough to avoid tripping and that they are able to see clearly from behind their costume. Consider using face make-up rather than masks, which may significantly obstruct a child’s vision.
- Examine treats: check candy for choking hazards or tampering before enjoying them.
