Safety Tips For Driving In Winter Conditions
Winter driving can be stressful, but you can reduce the risk of accidents and collisions by driving defensively and planning ahead. When possible, avoid driving in severe conditions, but when you must drive in snowy or slippery conditions, follow these safety tips to help keep you, your passengers and other drivers safe:
- Slow down! Set your speed according to the weather conditions and leave plenty of room between you and the vehicle in front of you.
- Plan your route in advance, check traffic reports and give yourself extra time to reach your destination – rushing in poor weather conditions may lead to accidents.
- Charge your mobile phone before heading out so you can contact emergency services or loved ones safely if you need help.
- Don’t talk or text – using your mobile phone while driving is unsafe and against the law!
- Be prepared for delays and potential weather changes while travelling:
- Keep your fuel tank relatively full
- Top up your windshield washer fluid
- Keep a snow brush/ice scraper in your car
- Prepare or purchase an emergency car kit to keep in each vehicle you own.
