Michael Laplante is a Certified Specialist in Civil Litigation and partner at Ferguson Barristers LLP. Michael joined the team in 2002, and became a partner in 2007.
In this article he shares his experiences in practising personal injury law and civil litigation.
Growing up in Port Elgin, a small Ontario town on Lake Huron, gave me an appreciation for life in small communities. After launching my law career in British Columbia, I came back to Ontario to establish my personal injury law practice in Midland, Ontario where I enjoy the pace of small town life on Georgian Bay.
Trial and Appeals Court Experience
Practicing law in two provinces offered the opportunity to argue motions, trials and appeals in both Ontario and British Columbia. While in B.C. I argued before the Provincial and Supreme Courts of British Columbia as well as the B.C. Workplace Safety and Insurance Appeals Tribunal.
My experience has also included appearing before the Superior Court and Court of Appeal of Ontario, as well as the Ontario Workplace Safety and Insurance Appeals Tribunal, the Criminal Injuries Compensation Board, and the Financial Services Commission of Ontario.
Settling Insurance Disputes and Personal Injury Claims
My early practice involved defending the Insurance Corporation of British Columbia and gave me a grounding in how the defence deals with personal injury claims. I feel that allows me to preempt their requirements, and get to settlement faster for my clients. Since 2002 I have exclusively represented injury victims, my practice consists almost entirely of serious personal injury claims and insurance disputes.
As a member of the Ontario Trial Lawyers Association, the Advocate Society, the Canadian and Ontario Bar Associations, and the Simcoe County Law Association , I maintain a close connection to developments in the legal community. I am also an active supporter of the firm’s Canadian Paraplegic Association pro-bono legal clinic.
When away from the office, I enjoy spending time with my wife, Sheila and our two daughters. We like to spend winter on the ski hills, and enjoy sailing throughout the summer.
