Midland, Ontario Injury Lawyer Working With Community to Improve Accessibility for People With Spinal Cord Injuries

Lisa Belcourt, Midland, Ontario Personal Injury lawyer Lisa Belcourt is a personal injury lawyer who has proven to be a strong advocate for people with disabilities in several small Ontario communities. Her work in Midland, Ontario has been recognized by the Canadian Bar Association. In this post we share a personal perspective on Lisa’s practice.

Lisa grew up on a farm in Oro-Medonte and attended high school in Midland and Penetanguishene.  Her teachers often lamented she was an opinionated, outspoken student. Lisa’s parents recall that from an early age she wanted to be a lawyer.

During the latter years of her undergraduate degree, Lisa began working with Rod Ferguson, first as a legal assistant and then later as a law clerk. It was there that her career plans were solidified.  Rod encouraged Lisa to become involved in the community.

Prior to starting law school she was a volunteer probation officer. During her years at Osgoode Hall Law School, Lisa volunteered with CLASP, the community legal clinic at York University. That was when Lisa became aware of the huge gaps in the justice system that leave many low-income people without the ability to exercise their rights.

Improving Legal Accessibility For People with Disabilities in Barrie, Muskoka, Sudbury, Midland and Sault Ste. Marie

Since graduating from law school, Lisa has continued to be very involved in the community.  She is currently a Board member of Community Living Huronia and also sits as the community member for the Tiny Township Accessibility Advisory Committee.  In 2003, recognizing that many people suffering from spinal cord injuries experience difficulties in accessing the legal system, she spearheaded the Ferguson Barristers – Canadian Paraplegic Pro-Bono Legal Clinic.

This clinic provides free legal consultation and, in many cases, legal services to members of the Canadian Paraplegic Association in Ontario.  Over the past eight years, the endeavour has grown to include Barrie, Sudbury, Muskoka and Sault Ste. Marie. In 2008, Lisa’s contributions were recognized by the Canadian Bar Association and she received the Young Lawyers’ Pro-Bono Award.

Lisa and her husband and their children live in the outskirts of Midland-Penetanguishene.  Lisa spends her spare time reading, camping, cooking and coping with her two opinionated, outspoken daughters.
